Volunteer role

Cultural Ambassador Docent

Welcome the world at Balboa Park — speak about Afghan culture, history, and life. Broken English is welcome; spirit speaks louder than fluency.

About the role

On the lawns and in the halls of Balboa Park, the world walks by — and you are the house's welcome to it. As a Cultural Ambassador Docent you spend a few weekend hours sharing Afghan culture with visitors: the history, the customs, the poetry, the food, and the way a guest is treated like a gift. You do not need perfect English. If you carry the culture, you can share it.

What you'll do
  • Greet visitors at Balboa Park and share Afghan culture, history, and daily life
  • Tell the stories — of poetry, hospitality, music, and home
  • Answer questions warmly and honestly
  • Represent the house at December Nights, the Lawn Program, and weekend gatherings
What you bring
  • Love for Afghan culture and a willingness to share it
  • A warm, welcoming presence
  • Weekend availability, in person at Balboa Park
  • English as a second language is perfectly welcome — broken English and all
What we provide
  • A short orientation on speaking with visitors
  • Talking points and materials
  • The pride of representing your heritage in public
  • Verification of service hours
