What the house is, what the Canon is, and how to take part. If your question isn't here, write to us — every message is read by a person.
A nonprofit cultural institution in San Diego, working to awaken, document, preserve, and carry forward the philosophical, intellectual, and cultural inheritance of the Afghan people — so future generations inherit more than fragments. We are a candidate cottage of the House of Pacific Relations in Balboa Park.
No. We are not about the nation-state, flags, or politics, and we are not a religious body. Our work is cultural and intellectual — the ideas, manners, stories, and ways of seeing that people carry, wherever they are.
It's both, and the two reinforce each other. First, the House exists to solve a problem: a generation inherited the food, language, and customs of Afghanistan, but not always the meaning behind them — and our mission is to awaken, document, preserve, and carry that inheritance forward. That work would matter anywhere in the world.
We also chose to become one of the International Cottages of Balboa Park — the House of Pacific Relations, a nearly century-old family of cultural houses. It gives a young institution legitimacy and a permanent seat among San Diego's cultural community, and roots us in the city so many Afghan families now call home. The mission is the work; the cottage is where it takes its place in the world. Read more about the House →
Yes — House of Afghanistan, Inc. is a California 501(c)(3) nonprofit (EIN 33-1233040). Gifts are tax-deductible to the extent allowed by law.
The Canon is our living repository of Afghan heritage — a long effort to gather, verify, distill, and openly share the philosophical, intellectual, and cultural inheritance of the Afghan people. It is being built now, entry by entry. Read about the Canon →
Yes, and it always will be. Nothing we publish is placed behind a paywall — keeping it free is exactly what your support makes possible.
Please do. Oral histories, photographs, letters, and family customs are the raw material of the Canon. Write to us and we'll help you share them, or entrust them to the archive safely.
Three ways: become a patron with a grant, become a recurring member, or volunteer your time and skills. Each keeps the Canon free and the house moving toward a permanent home.
To the Canon's archive, the cost of gatherings, youth programs and scholarships, and the long candidacy for a permanent cottage in Balboa Park. We are volunteer-run, so your gift goes a long way.
Every patron family is named in the house, in perpetuity. As the house grows into its rooms and programs, patrons will be the first invited to give their name to them. See the patrons →
Not at all. The house is open to everyone — neighbors, students, and friends of the culture. Most volunteer roles need no experience, only care; many welcome remote help.
Yes. San Diego students can meet their graduation service hours with us, and we gladly verify every hour. Start here →
We don't yet have a permanent visitor location — we are a candidate cottage at Balboa Park, and we gather at the Hall of Nations and at events like December Nights. Our mailing address is for post only. See what's coming up →
The language is Farsi. "Dari" is a descriptor — Farsi-e Dari means Afghan Persian, as opposed to Iranian Persian. They are not separate languages, but dialects of Persian with distinct accents and vocabulary.
No. Most of what we do is welcoming to English speakers, and English as a second language is perfectly welcome. Sometimes the most meaning is carried by spirit, not by tongue.

We say the inheritance runs four thousand years deep — so here is the proof, era by era. Drag the marker across the centuries, from the Neolithic to today, to trace every civilization that shaped this land.

We'd love to hear from you. Every message reaches a person, not a queue.
